VERWERING

Verwering
quilt 50 x 50 cm

VERWERING : quilt 50 x 50 cm Theme : Weathered by time.
I wanted to make a quilt with weathered textile and it must represents something that's is from the old days but is still there.
So I came up with Hadrian's Wall. This quilt is a design not a real spot of the wall.
Hadrian's Wall /Vallum Hadriani stands in the north of England and is build by leginairs of the Roman army from 122 till 128 AD. It was ordered by Emporer Hadrian (117-138 AD). He was in England in 121 AD and wated the "Limes"  a border of the Roman Empire to keep out the barbarians. In this place the Picts, predecessors of the Scots.
The Wall is 117 km and runs from New Castle to the westcoast near Carlisle. The wall is 3 m. wide and 4 till 5 m. high, made from limestone quarried localy by the Roman soldiers. There were about 9000 men building and living behind the wall in forts. The wall was origanaly 5 m high but because of time weathered and broken off after the Fall of the Roman Empire after 400 AD. It was also used as building material by the locals.
On the right of the quilt there is the origanel wall and going to the left it is crumbling down, getting older and smaller. That's why the title Verwering: in Dutch the same word for weathering out but also for standing up against an enemy.
The wall is made of grey plain cotton painted with several textilepaints and handquilted in going on smaller and more stitched cubes. For the sky I used a self dyed blue cotton with quilted angelina for the morningmist and the clouds are parts of a wornout pillowsheet.
In our Mayholiday in 2005 we did as a family the 117 km Hadrian's Wall Walk in 6 days. We had passed the Wall several times on and of to Scotland and already visited the musea and forts. So now we walked the hole wall. The wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Sideand the wall walk is ther now for 10 years. The wall walk is walked by 11,000 people and visited by 750,00 people a year.  The landscape is beautiful and you wouldn't say it was so busy when you see the pictures.
The wall was in films like the Prince of Thieves with Kevin Kostner. The treescene was there where F is walking (2e picture of our walk) Third picture is of the first part of the wall coming from  New Castle we saw in the morningmist. 4th picture is  enlarged  hanging on the wall in our livingroom. As a memory of a great walk through special landscape and tiny villages. After 6 days in open farmland we took the train back to New Castle. 1½ hour and we were back in a busy town.
